Board Size

Does Cornhole Board size matter? Yes and no. The Long Boards (LB) are 4ft long by 2ft wide (48in x 24in) and are a popular selection for tournaments because they are regulation size. The Tailgate (TG) Boards are 1ft shorter than the LBs and are 3ftx2ft (36in x 24in). TG Boards are a popular selection for many players, including those in the ATL. One might think the Tailgate size would be more challenging because the deck area is smaller; however, in side-by-side tests, players found that landing bags on the TG deck is equally as difficult as landing bags on an LB deck. Difficultly is really dependent on how far the boards are separated apart. Because the separation distance (27ft pros, 24ft causal, 20ft junior) is measured from the leading (front) edge of the board, both the Tailgate and Long Board size boards have equal separation distance between them. Thus, both sizes have similar difficultly. With respect to portability and transporting, the Tailgate size is much more user friendly. Tailgate Boards fit in small cars and are easy to carry long distances. With respect to cost, the Tailgate size will be cheaper because fewer materials are used during TG production and shipping costs will be lower because TG Boards weigh less than LB Boards. When we have events, we always bring both sizes and have a lot of fun with the TGs and LBs. The set we use the most is the Pro version of the TG with our special 5pt slot and a Heritage finish. Our Camper Boards are slightly smaller than our Pro Tailgate Boards, making the Camper size ultra portable and very fun.

Bag Toss Cornhole Board Size Comparison
Quick Tip: The Tailgate size is the most popular for people who play a few times a year and want something easy to carry around. The Long Board is most common and often referred to as “Regulation”. The Camper size is perfect for traveling and camping. Our Mini Boards are extremely portable.

Standard and Pro Packages (hint: this has nothing to do with the size of the boards)

Many people ask if they should select the Pro package and this depends on a bit on their budget. Our Pro Boards are for those people who want the best and are willing to pay a little extra (see table below). The Standard Package (SP) is for those who play several times a year but don't want to spend extra money on a premium set. Below is a summary of the differences. I included the Camper Boards, which are not offered in the Pro Package, for comparison, as they fit in a niche; a portable set of boards for players who want high-quality Cornhole Boards.
The primary differences are as follows:

Standard Package
  • Bags for Pro and Standard Boards are the same size (6in x 6in) and weight (15oz). The Camper sets come with 12oz bags
  • Pro Boards have built in bag storage that is integrated into the fold out kickstand. Standard and Camper Boards come with a standard fold out kickstand and a tote bag for the Cornhole bags.
  • Pro Boards have more stiffness for better deck response to bags.
  • Pro Boards are heavier for less movement during bag impacts.
  • Pro Boards have a smoother finish (see bag slide below).
  • Pro Boards have more finishing coats inside and out. All boards are coated/sealed inside and out.
  • Pro Boards have stainless steel hardware. Standard and Camper Boards have stainless steel washers and zinc-plated bolts.
  • Pro Boards have rubber feet on the front and back contact points. Standard Boards only have them on the front and Camper Boards do not have any.
  • Pro and Standard Boards have Easy Grab handles. Camper Boards do not.
  • Pro boards get a premium wood selection. This means we pick plywood that has better aesthetics and less likely to have surface ply patches. Standard package boards may have a few ply patches. Patches are done at the mill and are difficult to eliminate or work around. The plywood we use has nine plies. If the top and/or bottom ply has a knot, the mill cuts it out and places a patch (sometime football shape about 2 inches x 2 inches in size). The patch is supposed to be for strength. Rest assured that they are cosmetic only and will not hurt the performance or durability of the product.

Most of our competitors strive to make their products as cheap as possible, but we work hard to make our products the best they can be. Our boards are of excellent quality, have a great natural feel and are made in the USA! A unique aspect of our boards is that they are easy to take with you. Easy Grab™ handles are integrated on our Pro and Standard Boards. We designed our boards to be light-weight, stiff and strong. We use high quality 1/2in thick birch plywood on all our boards. The edges of the boards are finger jointed that allow for bi-directional fastening, which adds strength. Nobody else makes boards like we do because our products are designed and tested by engineers who have years of experience. Pound for pound, our boards are the best. A full-grown man can stand on these boards without breaking them.

Bag Slide - Bag slide is an important characteristic and is something we have spent a long time working on. Our Pro Boards have a very smooth finish. This results in terrific slide characteristics. There is no need for dust. Believe us, these boards are amazing. The Standard Package Boards have less slide initially because they don't have as many finishing coats. Standard Package Boards will break in over several games and will quickly develop great slide characteristics.

If you are new to the game, you may wonder how bag slide affects Cornhole. If the bags are sliding a lot, it is more difficult to get a point by landing bags on the board; However, it is easier to get 3pts because the bag will slide right in the hole when the toss is in line with the hole (i.e. the bag lands on the center of the board in front of the hole and slides into the hole). Players with good aim will prefer more slide because they want 3pts. Players with bad aim will want less slide because they want the bags to stay on the board. With practice, your aim will get better, so don't be discouraged if your bags are sliding off the deck. Adding arch to the toss is the best way to get bags to "stick" when they hit the deck. Visit our instructional page on Cornhole tossing for more help with this.

Game Selection

Bag Toss 2 (BT2) is unique because it has a hole and a slot, whereas Bag Toss Classic (CLA) just has a hole. A bag on the BT2 Board is worth 1pt, a bag in the hole is worth 3pts and a bag in the slot is worth 5pts. Most people who have played this game for years will prefer the classic version without having tried the BT2 version, but we have found that most people who play with the slot, love the slot. It adds a different level of excitement to the game that makes it even more fun to play. Once you go slot, you never go back. The main reason people love the BT2 is the different scoring options. Landing a bag in the slot can be a fun challenge, and many times a bag will land near the slot, giving the player a chance to nudge it in. My personal favorite is the "shocker" shot. This is where a bag is sitting between the slot and the hole, and another bag is tossed and causes the bag on the board to fall into the slot, while the bag that was just tossed bounces back and goes in the hole. This is an 8pt shot. The look on your opponent's face will be priceless. And, of course, if you do call your shot and make your bag into the 5pt slot, the crowd will go wild. If you love the feeling of making a 3pt shot into the hole, imagine how wonderful it will feel to land your bag in the 5pt slot.

Bag Toss 2 (BT2) has the 5pt slot, which can result in some unbelievable shots and scoring plays.

Finish

Our Bag Toss Boards come in either a Natural Blonde (BLD), Heritage (HER) or Rebel (REB) finish. A Blonde finish is a lightly tinted clear coat over the bare wood. The Heritage and Rebel finishes involve staining the wood, then applying clear coats. All three finishes are amazing to look at and are very durable. The Heritage and Rebel finishes cost a bit more due to the extra step of staining. Because we create new batches of stain daily to ensure quality, we cannot guarantee stain uniformity. We offer custom color customization for those who want to spice up their boards. See our customization section below. Some neat designs can be achieved by carefully masking areas where you don't want the wood to show through. For those who love to DIY, our clear coat finish can be painted onto custom work without problems.

The entire board is brush-coated with an outdoor-grade, low-VOC protective coating. Brushing on the coating is important because it ensures equal parts of coating will reach every portion of the board. We researched extensively to purchase a product that eliminates the toxins released into the environment from oil-based coatings. The low-VOC coating that we use meets our requirement to avoid damaging the environment. Our clear coat costs about $60 per gallon, and each set of boards uses about 1/5th of a gallon. Cheaper sets of boards are inexpensive because they skimp on the materials. We don't!

Baltic Birch Plywood

We recently switched to a superior plywood that is highly moisture and heat resistant. This is accomplished with a boil proof glue line combined with Baltic birch plies. The Baltic birch wood grows in the frigid parts of northern Europe, like Russia and Finland. Due to the cold, it is more dense and stronger than normal birch. With almost zero % core voids, the plies are incredibly uniform. With this change, our boards are now 30% heavier and 200% stronger than our previous boards.
